Swatch presents new work by Sigrid Calon at La Biennale Arte 2015
In collaboration with Swatch, Dutch artist sigridcalon has created two fascinating new #swatch Art Specials; DUET IN BLUE AND RED and DUET IN GREEN AND PINK.
Inspired by embroidery, Sigrid’s designs often begin with the horizontal and diagonal lines of perforated cardboard. She applies a simple set of rules to generate colorful grids and patterns and uses gradients available in risographic printing, a stencil-print technique, to add depth and volume.
Sigrid’s innovative #design for the new #swatch Art Special DUET IN BLUE AND RED (GZ298S, Gent Original) uses multiple colored, transparent disks in place of hands; as the minutes and hours pass and the disks rotate, the dial presents fascinating new patterns. It will be presented at la biennalearte2015 in September 2015 during a welcome #event for the new wave of artists from The #swatch Art Peace Hotel. From then on, it will be on display at #swatch FACES 2015 – PAVILION AT ARSENALE, together with the work of the newly-arrived artists and additional artwork by Sigrid Calon. The latter includes a series of risographic prints based on portraits taken from the archive of Willem van Zoetendaal and transformed by the artist. Also on display are a number of textile prints, compositions from her award-winning book, “To the extend of / \ | & -“ that have been scanned and digitally printed on a large scale.
Available in a limited and numbered edition of 999 pieces, DUET IN BLUE & RED is presented in special packaging designed by the artist. Along with the watch and a flipbook, the packaging contains a colorful toy made with multiple rotating disks that generate, like the watch dial, intriguing new patterns.
“The collaboration with #swatch is super exciting and I’m very proud that they asked me,” said the artist. “I was looking for a new way to watch the time that would be a bit different every minute. I wanted to create something strong, simple and fresh, so I used my grid and clear colors.” #swatch and sigridcalon have also created a second watch, DUET IN GREEN AND PINK (SUOZ208, New Gent), which will be launched in November in an edition of 9,999.
