Doria1905 and Officina del Poggio to launch exclusive Summer capsule of hats


The joining of expertise between to sectors always gives birth to extraordinary collections, when traditional methods cross and interact with each other and in which creativity and careful attention to quality are the common thread. Two realities that portray the best of authentic Made in Italy: #doria1905, an iconic brand from Salento that excelled throughout the entire twentieth century and now brings their craftsmanship and innovation into the third millennium, and Officina del Poggio, a new brand founded in Bologna in 2014 creating leather accessories with an elegant contemporary essence, showcasing old-world Italian craftsmanship.

Following the success of the winter launches of the ODPEssentials Collection, a series of exclusive capsule collections in which Officina del Poggio teams up with artisans across various sectors to create limited editions of unique and timeless accessories, #doria1905 and ODP are launching an exclusive summer capsule of the straw Doria1905 for ODP O’Keeffe Hat, available online May 22nd.

"I was born and raised in Texas, so hats are in my DNA and I have always been fascinated by their shapes and the types of workmanship. I am also always intrigued by their use in Western films, how characters are always defined by the type and shape of hat they wear, and how other personalities always have their signature hat shape. I have also always been inspired by Georgia O'Keefe and her style, especially after visiting an exhibition at the Brooklyn Museum several years ago, by her deep attention to detail, commissioning dresses from high-end seamstresses and even making clothing herself, with timeless style and pieces which she wore repeatedly. She was a woman at the forefront of her times, independent and a pioneer as a successful artist during an era and in a sector which was totally dominated by men, " said Allison Hoeltzel Savini, founder of Officina del Poggio and consultant for international luxury brands.

The shape chosen for the collaboration with #doria1905 resembles a "Gambler Hat", with an oval/telescopic volume, but with a flat brim for a more modern look, inspired by the hats commonly worn by Georgia O'Keefe. The leather cording and details are handcrafted by Officina del Poggio's leatherworkers using the same vegetable-tanned leather used for the bags.

"The shape of this hat is born from an iconic model of Doria1905: this telescope crown has seen different interpretations over the years, from short-brimmed styles to more masculine medium brims, to the our Sorrento model of 2019 with a very wide and flat brim. Over the past years 60 years, Doria has been popular in the United States and that is why some of its most iconic shapes are inspired by American classics, such as the drop and the telescope or open crown," said Alessandra Maregatti, creative director of #doria1905 and an international reference point in the world of hat design

The #doria1905 for Officina del Poggio O'Keefe Hat is made of paja-toquilla threads, also called “Panama Brisa”: it is a simple weave generated by single threads, which gives it a lightness and texture opening that give a particular freshness to the hat. The forming process is a succession of extremely manual phases where machines help skilled craftsmen create the shapes while keeping the lightness of the material intact. The hat bodies are first vaporized with the aid of dry steam and then pressed onto aluminium forms and ironed onto wooden blocks. Skilled seamstresses then hand-sew the internal grosgrain ribbon which is heat­stamped with gold foil to mark the exclusive logo and limited-edition serial numbers, then pressed with an iron to give it the perfect funnel shape. After applying the eyelets, the pure leather laces are fixed by hand along the crown and are finished as a leather chin strap, perfect for summer activities to ensure the wearer never loses the hat.
