Montblanc Brand Ambassador Hugh Jackman Shines at Gala Dinner in Hong Kong

Hugh Jackman flew in as a surprise special guest of #montblanc in September to unveil the latest timepieces. The actor enthralled with an appearance at Watches&Wonders and attended a glamorous gala dinner where he was the guest of honour.

A Grand Unveiling

Gathered press and special guests of the Maisonwere the first to glimpse a new #montblanc Heritage collection treasure, the #montblanc Heritage Chronométrie Dual Time Vasco Da Gama Limited Edition 238, spied glinting from the actor’s wrist at Watches&Wonders.

The impressive timepiece belongs to the Maison’s Heritage Collection of pieces inspired by and created in the spirit as the pioneering Portuguese discoverer Vasco Da Gama. In 1497, the intrepid adventurer navigated a new seaway to India making trade between Asia and Europe a wondrous new possibility.

A Party Under Stars

As dusk fell over the city, 200 invited guests arrived at The Grand Hyatt, #hongkong for an exclusive #event held by #montblanc to unveil a new timepieces collection. Brand ambassador #hughjackman made his appearance wearing a stunning showpiece, the #montblanc Villeret Tourbillon Cylindrique NightSky Geosphères debuting a new 18K white gold edition. The horological masterpiece was central to the night’s theme, which was dedicated to the legacy of Vasco Da Gama.

Guests mingled over cocktails in a foyer lit like the night sky, viewing master craftsman at work alongside #montblanc collections. Above them, a large revolving globe only hinted at the journey to come. Upon a trumpet’s call, black drapes swung open onto a transformed ballroom and guests began an epic trip back to the days of Vasco Da Gama.

Under the dramatic allusion of a sky strewn with crystal stars threaded with constellations and navigational symbols, they made their way to long glowing tables. Lightshows on the tables mirrored the expansive ceiling above evolving from pale blue daytime skies to dreamy dusk hues until the dark still beauty of night took command.

Corked bottles served as placeholders and contained evocative coiled scrolls –menus that resembled timeworn treasure maps. Unravelling them revealed a richly imaginative menu of four courses recalling the different steps of Vasco da Gama’s trip.Among the evening’s gourmet surprises was an Alaskan crab salad with crystal caviar and avocado cream, an oven-baked fillet of a 51-toothed fish and The Globe – Beyond 2015, a delicate dark chocolate sphere with cinnamon-infused caramel mousse, raspberry marshmallow and hot chocolate sauce.

As haunting songs of voyage were performed and as #montblanc CEO Jérôme Lambert took to the stage, subtle projections continued to illuminate images of the Portuguese pioneer’s ship on the walls around. The maison gave a special video screening championing Da Gama’s uncharted journey that added to the evening’s entertainment, which culminated in enthusiastic calls for Mr. Jackman to make a speech. In a night of stars among stars, Mr. Jackman shone bright, delighting all with his intimate knowledge of the #montblanc pieces that mean so much to him.

About Vasco Da Gama

Vasco Da Gama’s expedition set sail from Portugal’s Lisbon in July 8, 1497 headed for the coast of India with an ambitious intention. The vessels were to establish a Southern seaway for the unhindered trade of precious gems and spices. Without use of timekeepers to calculate longitude, Da Gama navigated using constellations, in particular The Southern Cross, whose four-point star aided the shrewd mariner in charting new territory. He became the first European seafarer to round Africa’s Cape of Good Hope, reaching India on May 20, 1498.

In Homage and Inspiration

Montblanc honours Vasco Da Gama’s courage, thirst for action and command of precision with its #montblanc Heritage Chronométrie collection. Built with the same extreme precision displayed by the adventurer, a number of unique pieces in the series bear the name Vasco da Gama in a fitting tribute.
